Chaotic vibrations in a regenerative cutting process
نویسنده
چکیده
We have analyzed vibrations generated in an orthogonal cutting process. Using a simple one degree of freedom model of the regenerative cutting we have observed the complex behaviour of the system. In presence of a shaped cutting surface, the nonlinear interaction between the tool and a workpiece leads the to chatter vibrations of periodic, quasi-periodic or chaotic type depending on system parameters. To describe the profile of the surface machined by the first pass we used a harmonic function. We analyzed the impact phenomenon between the tool and a workpiece after their contact loss.

Transmitted vibrations to the wrist and arm of a chainsaw operator: The effect of wood cutting process
Introduction: Due to the non-developed mechanization situation, chainsaw is a widely used tool in Iranian forests. This tool can trigger unwelcome disorders (e.g., white finger syndrome) due to the transmitted vibrations from its handle to the body members. Characterizing these vibrations can result in minimizing the intensity of these disorders. This study aims to investigate the effect of dif...
متن کاملGlobal dynamics of low immersion high-speed milling.
In the case of low immersion high-speed milling, the ratio of time spent cutting to not cutting can be considered as a small parameter. In this case the classical regenerative vibration model of machine tool vibrations reduces to a simplified discrete mathematical model. The corresponding stability charts contain stability boundaries related to period doubling and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. T...
متن کاملMode-Coupled Regenerative Machine Tool Vibrations
In this paper a new 3 degree-of-freedom lumped-parameter model for machine tool vibrations is developed and analyzed. One mode is shown to be stable and decoupled from the other two, and thus the stability of the system can be determined by analyzing these two modes. It is shown that this mode-coupled nonconservative cutting tool model including the regenerative e¤ect (time delay) can produce a...
متن کاملTheoretical Approximation of the Vibration in a Regenerative Cutting Process
ABSTRACT In this paper, the phenomenon of chatter vibration in metal cutting is investigated. For this purpose, a theoretical one-degree of freedom model of the vibrations generated in an orthogonal cutting process is developed. The dynamic cutting forces are strongly affected by the variations of the cutting process parameters, and the model is based on the mechanical theoretical prediction of...
متن کاملMultiple Mode Analysis of the Self-Excited Vibrations of Rotary Drilling Systems
This paper extends the approach proposed by Richard et al (2007) to analyze the axial and torsional vibrations of drilling systems that are excited by the particular boundary conditions at the drag bit-rock interface, by basing the formulation of the model on a continuum representation of the drillstring rather than on a characterization of the drilling structure by a two degree of freedom syst...
